Nexus Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026
1. Who we are
Nexus is made by Compendium Systems ("we," "us," or "our").
Nexus is a companion app for a Nexus unit: a small computer installed aboard your boat that reads your boat's instruments and monitors your anchor. The app lets you view your boat's data and receive alarms either on the boat's Wi-Fi or remotely through our servers.
2. What we collect
Information Nexus needs to work. Nexus collects only the information necessary to provide the service:
- Your account: your email address and how you sign in. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we keep the account identifier they give us, and the email address they share (with Apple, this can be a private relay address). If you sign in with Apple, we also keep a token Apple issues to us, used only to end your Sign in with Apple for Nexus when you delete your account. If you sign in with a code sent to your email, we keep the code only in hashed form, and only until it is used or expires 10 minutes after it is sent. Nexus has no passwords, so we store none.
- Your agreement to our terms: which versions of the Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy you agreed to, when, and the version of the app you used. This is our record of what you agreed to.
- Your devices: a random identifier for each installation of the app, the push-notification token provided by Apple or Google, and any name you give the device. The device name is shown in your boat's log.
- Your boats: each boat's ID, name, and details you enter, such as its type and dimensions; the people linked to the boat and whether each is an owner or crew; invitations to join the boat and requests to join it; and the network information needed to connect to it securely.
- Alarm notifications: a record of notifications sent for your boat, including the alarm, when it was sent, and its details. These records are kept for 30 days.
- Connection records: routine server logs, including IP address, time, and request information, used for security and troubleshooting.
- Automatic routes: when you ask our servers to plan a route, we receive its start and end points, your boat's draft, height and length, and the route options you chose. We use them to plan the route and do not keep them; our records of a route request note only the region and the route's length.
Information collected only if you turn on the cloud copy of your Ship's Log. The cloud copy is off by default and can be turned on under Settings › Data usage › Ship's log. If you turn it on, we collect:
- If you opt in, a copy of your boat's log: the Ship's Log maintained by your boat, including passages, anchorings, alarms, maintenance records, information about what is aboard, and the people aboard that you record. This includes the boat's position at the times recorded in the log, allowing you to read and add to the log while away from the boat.
- Papers and documents: documents you file in the log, including photos you choose to add.
- Questions and answers: questions you ask the book and the answers provided, so that answers can be delivered to you. A question is sent with a short summary of your boat's current readings so the answer can take them into account; we do not keep that summary.
Information collected only if you share trips. Sharing trips (Nexus Tracks) is off by default; your boat is Private until you choose Shared or Public under Settings › Share trips. While a boat is Shared or Public, it sends us:
- The trips it shares: the boat's name and, along each trip, its positions and times, speed and course, and the wind, depth, pressure, water temperature and waves measured or forecast there; the trip's name and where it is going; and, if you choose to show them, the planned route and the arrival time. Positions near the home berth you set are removed on the boat before anything is sent.
- How it is shared: the boat's public address if it is Public, the names you give each Shared link, and each link's key in hashed form, and the delay you set.
Information sent only when you send a diagnostics report. Settings › Diagnostics checks how Nexus runs on your device. Its results stay on your device unless you tap "Send to Nexus", or turn on "Tell Nexus if the chart goes blank" (off by default), which sends a report when the chart stops drawing. A diagnostics report contains:
- Diagnostics: your device's model, operating system and screen size, the version of the app, how much drawing memory the chart used at each zoom and whether it went blank, and how quickly our servers and chart tiles responded. A report never includes your boat's or your device's location. We use reports only to find and fix problems, and keep them for 90 days.
When the cloud copy is turned off, your boat keeps its log on the boat itself. You can access it while connected to the boat's Wi-Fi, and questions about the boat's current information are answered on your phone.
The app never reads your phone's GPS, contacts, or photo library. The only locations we store are your boat's positions in the log copy, if you turn it on, and on trips you choose to share; the only photos are the ones you choose to file in the log. Nexus contains no advertising, tracking, or analytics code.
3. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Sign you in and keep your account secure.
- Connect you to your boats, including relaying live boat data to your phone when you are away from the boat.
- Deliver your boat's alarms, such as anchor-dragging or man-overboard alarms, as notifications.
- If you have turned on the cloud copy of your Ship's Log, keep the log available to you and the other owners of the boat, and answer questions you ask about it.
- If you share trips, show them to the people you shared them with, or to anyone if the boat is Public.
- Plan automatic routes you ask for.
- Find and fix problems on your device from diagnostics reports you send us.
- Keep the service operating, and diagnose and fix problems.
4. Where your information is stored and how long we keep it
Information we store is kept on our servers in the United States.
Live data from your boat passes through our servers so that it can reach your phone. We do not retain this live data after it has been delivered. Your boat's own Ship's Log remains on the boat.
We keep:
- Account data for as long as your account exists.
- The record of which Terms of Service and Privacy Policy you agreed to, when, and the email address you agreed under, for six years after you delete your account; then we delete it.
- Alarm-notification records for 30 days.
- Diagnostics reports you send for 90 days.
- A cloud copy of a boat's Ship's Log only while the cloud copy is turned on. Turning it off deletes our copy immediately.
- Shared trips while the boat is Shared or Public. Switching it back to Private deletes them immediately, and a trip nobody has added to for 180 days is deleted. Encrypted backups of shared trips are kept for up to 30 days.
- Connection records for a limited period of time.
We do not keep backups of the cloud copy of your Ship's Log.
5. Who else receives your information
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share personal information for advertising purposes. To provide certain Nexus features, some information is sent to third parties:
- Apple and Google deliver push notifications to your phone.
- Weather, tide, and map services receive your boat's position, but not your name or email address, so they can provide forecasts, tides, currents, place names, and map images. These services are NOAA and the U.S. National Weather Service, Open-Meteo, OpenStreetMap (Nominatim), and CARTO.
- Other owners and crew of a boat can see that boat's data and Ship's Log when you share the boat with them, and the owners of a boat can see who is linked to it and who has asked to join.
- People you share trips with: anyone who has one of the boat's Shared links, or anyone at all if the boat is Public, can see its shared trips, including the boat's name and position, at track.compendiumnav.com.
- Our email provider (IONOS) delivers the sign-in codes we send to your email address.
- Apple and Google confirm who you are when you choose to sign in with them.
Questions you ask the book are answered by software running on our own servers. They are not sent to an outside AI provider.
We may disclose information when required to do so by law.
6. Connecting to your boat
When you are connected to your boat's Wi-Fi, the Nexus app communicates directly with the Nexus unit. This is why the app requests Local Network access.
When you are away from the boat, encrypted traffic passes through our servers so that the app can communicate with the Nexus unit remotely.
The app uses your camera only to scan a QR code — the sticker on a Nexus unit, or an invitation to join a boat — or to photograph papers and documents that you choose to add to your Ship's Log.
7. Deleting your data
Delete your account. In the app, go to Settings › User profile › Delete account. Deleting your account deletes your account information and your sign-in details, ends your Sign in with Apple for Nexus if you used it, signs you out on every device, removes your device notification tokens, deletes any diagnostics reports you sent, removes your links to your boats, cancels any invitations you sent that have not been used, and withdraws any requests you made to join a boat. Wherever your name appears in the cloud copy of a boat's Ship's Log, it is replaced with "a former crew member". We keep only the record of which Terms of Service and Privacy Policy you agreed to, when, and the email address you agreed under, for six years; then we delete it.
Delete the cloud copy of a boat's Ship's Log. In the app, go to Settings › Data usage › Ship's log and turn off "Keep a copy in the cloud". This immediately deletes our copy of that boat's Ship's Log, including any papers and documents stored with it. It does not delete or change the Ship's Log stored on the boat itself. If you later turn the cloud copy back on, the log will be uploaded again.
A boat's Ship's Log is shared by the people on the boat. If you were a boat's last owner and it still has crew, the crew member who joined first becomes its owner, and the boat keeps its cloud copy for them. If nobody else is linked to the boat, deleting your account also deletes our cloud copy of that boat's log. To delete the cloud copy of a boat that others still use, turn off "Keep a copy in the cloud". Either way, the log stored on the boat itself is not touched.
For any other privacy or data-deletion request, email info@compendiumnav.com.
8. Children
Nexus is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
9. Security
We use encryption in transit, one-time sign-in codes stored only in hashed form, per-boat encryption keys, and access controls to protect your information.
No system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Please keep access to the email account, Apple account or Google account you sign in with private.
10. Changes to this policy
If we make a meaningful change to this Privacy Policy, we will notify you through the app or by email and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy.
