What you need

  • A radar on the boat's network that Nexus can read.
  • Your phone or tablet on the boat's own Wi-Fi. The radar picture comes straight from the boat, so it shows only when you're connected Direct. Away from the boat the screen says "On the boat's Wi-Fi only". Radar alarms still reach you anywhere.

Reading the screen

  • Across the top: HDG (heading), SOG (speed over ground) and RANGE.
  • Under them, the radar's name and TX while it's transmitting, or Standby.
  • The scope: range rings with their distances, bearings every 30°, a dashed heading line, your boat at the centre, and AIS boats as triangles with their names.
  • Under the scope, a key to the colours, and notes when something limits the picture, such as "the boat is not sending a heading".

On an iPad or other wide screen, a TARGETS list shows the nearest echoes and AIS boats, with their distance and bearing, and whether a radar echo is closing.

Controls

  • − and +: a shorter or longer range, from 1/8 nm up to 4 nm, as far as your radar reaches.
  • H-UP / N-UP: head-up or north-up.
  • Doppler: colours echoes coming towards you and moving away, on radars that can.
  • BRIGHTNESS: Low, Medium or High.
  • AIS: show or hide AIS boats on the scope.
  • Guard ring: while the anchor is down, a dashed amber ring at your anchor alarm's warning distance. It's the same distance the radar alarm uses.
  • Anchor view: straight to the Anchor screen.

These choices are kept on this phone only.

Note: For now, transmit, standby, sea and rain are set on the radar or your chart plotter, not in Nexus. The app shows them but can't change them.

When there's no picture

  • "Waiting for the radar": the picture appears after the radar's first full turn.
  • "The radar is on standby": switch it to transmit on the radar or the plotter.
  • "No radar on this boat": Nexus hasn't found a radar on the boat's network.
  • "The radar did not answer": Nexus tries again every few seconds.
